Switzerland's largest battery storage facility was inaugurated on Friday in Ingenbohl in the canton of Schwyz. The storage facility represents significant progress in stabilizing the distribution grid and is a model for future energy storage solutions, announced Elektrizitätswerk Schwyz (EWS) and the Zug-based company MW Storage on Friday.

The stored energy could power around 15,400 computers for twelve hours - or allow 1960 electric cars to travel 100 kilometers each, according to the press release. The new battery energy storage system (BESS) produced by MW Storage is able to quickly deliver large amounts of power to the grid or absorb it from the grid. The new battery therefore helps to stabilize the electricity grid, the press release continued. The new mega-battery could be used to prevent blackouts.

According to the EWS website, this service, as well as the possibility of offering balancing energy on the market, is based on the intended profitability of the plant.

The battery was put into operation in the fall of 2020. However, it has been expanded in recent months. Initially, the battery generated 20 megawatts of power, now it has 28 megawatts. In order to expand the battery storage system by the desired eight megawatts, 24 battery modules were required. These have a total weight of 96 tons.
