The Basel Poetry Prize 2025 goes to the poet Levin Westermann. This was announced by the organizers on Monday. The prize, endowed with 10,000 francs, will be awarded at the Basel International Poetry Festival.
According to the jury, Levin Westermann is a poet with heart and soul, which is evident in all of his texts. His texts are interconnected, from poetry to essays to his novels. The jury also praised the wide thematic range of his work.
Westermann was born in Germany in 1980 and studied philosophy and sociology before completing his studies at the Swiss Literature Institute in Biel. His most recent publications are his novel "Zugunruhe" (2024) and the long poem "farbe komma dunkel" (2021). Westermann has previously been awarded the Swiss Literature Prize in 2021, among others.
The Basel Poetry Group awards the prize annually to poetry that is characterized by "innovative strength and the courage to work consistently and unconventionally with language". Westermann will be awarded the prize on January 25 as part of the Basel International Poetry Festival. The festival will take place from January 23 to 26, 2025.
