Retour au fil d'actualité
Lisa Mazzone, former member of the Council of States in Geneva, is running for President of the Swiss Green Party. She said this in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers and "Le Temps" published in advance on Tuesday evening.
"After giving it a lot of thought, I realized that it appeals to me. I believe that the office would be the right place to contribute my skills and convictions," said Mazzone in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers. That's why she decided to run for office: "My heart simply beats for the Greens!"
No co-presidency
According to Mazzone, a co-presidency is out of the question. She explained her position by saying that she was aware of the dominance of German-speaking Switzerland. The other parties will only have party presidents from German-speaking Switzerland in the coming legislature.
Various media outlets, including SRF radio and the French-language news portal "Blick", reported on her candidacy. The politician missed out on re-election to the Council of States last fall. In the second round of voting, she only came third behind Mauro Poggia (MCG) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP), with whom she had previously represented the canton of Geneva in the small chamber.
The application deadline for the successor to Zurich National Councillor Balthasar Glättli is February 4. The delegates will elect the new President at their meeting on April 6.
Some are still hesitant
Mazzone is the first politician to announce her candidacy. According to earlier statements, National Councillors Sibel Arslan (BS) and Irène Kälin (AG) have not yet decided on a candidacy. Arslan told the Keystone-SDA news agency that she could imagine running for office together with Mazzone.
Following Mazzone's announcement, Zurich National Councillor Marionna Schlatter told the Keystone-SDA news agency that she would not be standing as Glättli's successor. Instead, she is running for Vice President.
Schlatter had previously congratulated Mazzone on her candidacy on X (formerly Twitter): "Bravo, Lisa, on your candidacy. I would like to support you as Vice President," she wrote.
The executive committee of the Green Party of the Canton of Zurich unanimously nominated Schlatter as vice president on Tuesday evening, as the cantonal party announced. Schlatter brings with her many years of party leadership experience. As a national parliamentarian, she is also a well-known and high-profile representative of the Greens, according to the statement.
Several other politicians had already withdrawn from the race to succeed Glättli before Mazzone's interview, including parliamentary group leader Aline Trede, her Ticino National Councillor colleague Greta Gysin, Fribourg National Councillor Gerhard Andrey and Glarus Councillor of States Mathias Zopfi.
