The Swiss elections of 2023 saw an unprecedented number of candidates and lists, which overwhelmed the electorate. According to a post-election survey by SRG SSR and 20 Minuten/Tamedia, two thirds of respondents wanted each party to submit only one list in the future, and for sub-lists to be prohibited. The SVP benefited from the wide range of parties, gaining votes from across the political spectrum. The SP gained two percentage points from the Greens, but lost 0.4 and 0.5 to the Mitte and SVP respectively. The Mitte gained votes from the left and liberals, but lost 0.7 to the SVP. The biggest reason for switching to the SVP was dissatisfaction with the former party's migration policy (53%). The SP benefited from the topic of health insurance premiums. Gender/wokeness and the polarisation of parties motivated 25% of those surveyed to switch parties. A third of respondents believed that the FDP should immediately give the Mitte a seat in the Federal Council if it overtakes the FDP. According to a second post-election survey, 58% of those who voted for the Greens in 2019 did so again, while 21% voted for the SP. 29% of those who did not vote in 2019 voted for the SVP. Health costs were the most pressing political challenge (52%), followed by climate change (36%). 70% of those surveyed by Leewas said that health costs were the most pressing problem, followed by migration/immigration (51%) and pension provision (49%).
