"The next peace summit on Ukraine will not take place in Europe," the head of the Swiss delegation to the Bürgenstock Conference, Ambassador Gabriel Lüchinger, told Radio SRF on Monday. Saudi Arabia would be a possible host.
Interested countries would have to take steps themselves for the next conference on the Ukraine conflict. This is not now in Switzerland's hands, Lüchinger explained on SRF Radio's "Tagesgespräch" program. The Bürgenstock was the ideal place to start the process. From now on, Switzerland will act behind the scenes at the request of the key states.
All participants were delighted with the view of the mountains, the weather and the atmosphere, as the feedback from many delegations showed. For President Viola Amherd and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, the high-level conference was a good opportunity to hold meetings at the highest level and further expand their network for Switzerland.
Lüchinger describes the signing of the final declaration by 84 states as a great success. Switzerland has rarely taken such a big risk as it did at this conference. But it has paid off. The important thing is that with the Bürgenstock Declaration we now have something in our hands that we can develop further. Some countries have since withdrawn from the declaration and others have joined. Lüchinger did not give any specific details about which countries were involved.
Lüchinger was personally disappointed by China's refusal. He had personally met with the Chinese special envoy for Ukraine and Russia several times in the run-up to the conference. These had been good talks and China had signaled a strong interest in the peace process. The important dialog with China will now be continued.
In addition, Russia must now be integrated in some way, said Lüchinger. There were many countries present at the Bürgenstock that had very good relations with Russia. These countries wanted to use their contacts.
