A 54-year-old man from the canton of Aargau, who is accused of multiple acts of exhibitionism by the Solothurn public prosecutor's office, has resigned from the Mitte Aargau party. The Swiss national had stood as a candidate for the National Council on a centrist list in October.

He is withdrawing from party politics, the man said in a video published by "Blick" on its online portal on Wednesday. The accusations were about him and not about the party. The man was not recognizable in the video, his voice was distorted.

He had stood in the National Council elections in October on a centrist sub-list. Party president and member of the Council of States Marianne Binder-Keller told the "Aargauer Zeitung" that the man had resigned from the party immediately as a result of the proceedings.

The accused had previously been a member of the Aargau cantonal parliament for the Civic Democratic Party (BDP). He missed re-election eight years ago.

Regarding the charges, the man said in the video that the "vast majority" of the accusations made by the public prosecutor's office were not true. According to the public prosecutor's office on Monday, the accused partially confessed. He is at large under alternative measures.

The public prosecutor charged him with multiple sexual acts with a child and multiple acts of exhibitionism. He is alleged to have carried out exhibitionist and sexual acts in front of a total of 35 underage girls and young women between 2017 and 2022.

The crime scene was the Solothurn area on the River Aare near Aarau. The police arrested the man in July 2022 during targeted checks.
