A 24-year-old man is standing trial today Thursday before the Zurich Higher Court for attempted murder. In October 2019, he had driven a stolen car into a policewoman in Winterthur, seriously injuring her. In March 2022, the District Court of Winterthur found him guilty of multiple attempted murder and other offences and sentenced him to 16 years and three months in prison. However, due to the man's schizophrenia, the court ordered that the prison sentence be suspended in favour of a stationary measure with no predetermined end date, the release depending on the success of the treatment.

On the evening of 13 October 2019, the then 20-year-old man stole a BMW from a car garage in Neftenbach, Zurich and drove it at high speed towards Graubünden. The next day, he drove back to Winterthur. The police, who had been informed, set up a roadblock to stop him. When the accused realised that there were police officers all around him, he pressed the accelerator and tried to escape, driving directly towards two policewomen. One of them was thrown several metres away and was left seriously injured. The other policewoman managed to jump out of the danger zone.

The District Court of Winterthur followed the prosecutor's request for a sentence of twelve years. The defence lawyer pleaded for a sentence of four years for negligent bodily harm and other offences. All parties agreed that a stationary measure was appropriate.
