Some passenger trains will be able to travel through the Gotthard Base Tunnel in January and August 2025 despite planned maintenance work, but not all of them. This was stated by the Federal Council in a written answer to the National Council's question time.
Routine maintenance normally takes place during the nights from Saturday to Sunday and Sunday to Monday. However, this is not enough time for the most extensive work. For this reason, a third of one of the two tubes is closed for several weeks in January and August.
Passenger trains will therefore generally run on the old mountain route during the partial closure in January. However, individual passenger trains will be routed through the base tunnel for the benefit of commuters and tourists, as the Federal Council wrote.
During the construction work in August, more passenger trains will be able to travel through the base tunnel, as the demand for freight traffic will be lower during this time. In its response, the Federal Council then states that it is not necessary to divert freight trains via the Lötschberg-Simplon axis.
According to the Federal Council, it is currently not necessary to divert freight trains via the Simplon and Lötschberg axes during the maintenance work.
