Marieke Kruit ahead in Bern city council election

Marieke Kruit (SP) is leading the race for the Bernese city presidency. She received the most votes in the first ballot, but fell short of the absolute majority. She is followed by incumbent Alec von Graffenried (GFL), as the city announced on Sunday.

Kruit received 19,912 votes and von Graffenried 11,284 votes. Melanie Mettler (GLP) followed in next place with 7595 votes and Janosch Weyermann (SVP) with 3997 votes. Voter turnout was 51.3 percent. The run-off election is scheduled for January

Only those who are also elected to the municipal council can become mayor. The result of the municipal council election is expected between 9 and 10.30 pm.

Von Graffenried from the Green Free List has been Mayor of Bern since 2017. Before that, the office was in SP hands for decades.

Social Democrat Kruit has been a member of the city government since 2021. She heads the Directorate of Civil Engineering, Transport and Urban Greenery.
