The City Race planned for Sunday at the World Cycling Championships in Zurich has been canceled. Instead, there will be a guided memorial ride in memory of Muriel Furrer, who died in a crash. A central place of mourning will also be set up at the Wasserkirche in Zurich.
This was decided by the Local Organizing Committee of the UCI Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships Zurich 2024 (LOC), according to a statement on Saturday. The decision was made in consultation with the International Cycling Union (UCI), Swiss Cycling and Muriel Furrer's family.
The Memorial Ride is open to anyone who, together with the LOC, the UCI and Swiss Cycling, wants to support and offer comfort to Muriel's family, friends and the entire cycling community. Participation is free of charge.
Muriel Furrer died in Zurich University Hospital on Friday after suffering a severe traumatic brain injury the day before in a crash in the junior world championship race in Zurich.
The 18-year-old from the canton of Zurich fell in a wooded area above Küsnacht for as yet unexplained reasons and sustained serious head injuries. She was flown by helicopter to hospital in a critical condition.
