Merz rejects government’s offer for further migration talks

Friedrich Merz, head of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has sharply rejected accusations by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) that the CDU/CSU and its sister party, the CSU, had allowed the talks with the governing alliance on limiting migration to collapse for tactical reasons.
The claim that the failure of Tuesday's talks was "my script, so to speak" and "a staging by me (...) is infamous", said the CDU leader in his response to the Chancellor during the general debate on the budget in the Bundestag.
Merz rejected further offers from the traffic light government to continue talks on limiting immigration. The proposals of the "traffic light" government - named after the colors of the parties involved, SPD (red), Greens (green) and FDP (yellow) - fell far short of what was needed to limit migration.
"And that is why we are not entering into an endless loop of talks with you, I beg your indulgence," said Merz, adding: "You make the decisions in the government and we can continue to discuss everything else here in the German Bundestag."
