Retour au fil d'actualité

The number of animal experiments has increased despite fewer research projects involving animals. In 2022, according to the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV), more animals were used in experiments of severity 3, which means severe pain, long-term severe damage and great fear for the animals. The increase in animal experiments reflects the active research activity, the BLV said in a statement Thursday. On average, the number of experiments is in the lower range. With 40 fewer research projects involving animals last year, the total number of projects was 2334. However, the number of animals "used in research projects" increased by two percent in 2022 to a total of 585,991. This is in the lower range compared to the last twenty years, when between 560,000 and 760,000 animals were used in experiments each year. While the number of mice used for animal experiments decreased, the number of fish used increased significantly. Animal rights organizations see an urgent need for action. The current approaches are too little ambitious, the organizations Animal Rights Switzerland, Animalfree Research and Tier im Recht (TIR) said in a reaction. The number of animals in severely burdened experiments even increased by five percent compared to the previous year. Although the federal government wants to reduce the number of animal experiments, it has remained stable at 500,000 to 600,000 in recent years. The animal rights organizations therefore demand an exit plan from burdensome animal experiments.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
