Every person in Switzerland should submit their own tax return and pay their own taxes, regardless of their marital status. On Wednesday, the National Council accepted the counter-proposal to the tax justice initiative by a narrow majority.
It decided by 99 votes to 90 with 4 abstentions. The SP, FDP, Greens and GLP wanted to debate. The SVP and the Center Party voted against. The National Council can now discuss the law on individual taxation in detail. It is the indirect counter-proposal to the tax justice initiative.
The SP, Greens and GLP are calling for provisions in the counter-proposal to ensure that federal tax revenue does not fall by CHF 1 billion, as expected by the Federal Council, but that the losses are smaller or made up for. They have submitted two minority motions and called for a willingness to compromise as a precaution.
The SVP and centrists want to maintain marriage as an economic union. SVP representatives argued in favor of splitting, the centrists for the abolition of the marriage penalty.
