Debates in the National Council and the Council of States are to be subtitled live in future. The National Council was the first chamber to approve a corresponding bill on Tuesday.

By 181 votes to 5, with no abstentions, the upper chamber approved an amendment to the Federal Assembly's ordinance on the Parliament Act. The Council of States must now deal with it.

The bill was drawn up by the National Council office. It fulfills the main demand of a parliamentary initiative by Aargau SP National Councillor Gabriela Suter. It provides for the use of speech recognition software, supplemented by manual corrections.

Suter also wanted some parliamentary debates to be interpreted into sign language in future. The amendment to the ordinance says nothing about this. However, this point could be examined at a later date, according to the office's report on the bill. A selective translation of individual debates could also be implemented without a legal amendment.
