The National Cultural Dialogue has adopted four recommendations on how culture can reduce its ecological footprint. The recommendations are aimed at cultural funding bodies, as announced by the Federal Office of Culture on Monday.
When entire orchestras go on tour, thousands of people meet at major festivals or films are produced, this has a negative impact on the climate. The focus is now on the question of what contribution culture can make to achieving climate targets without restricting artistic freedom.
Against this backdrop, a working group entitled "Ecology in the cultural sector" has drawn up four recommendations for funding bodies at municipal, cantonal and federal level. According to these recommendations, they should ensure that cultural funding contributes to the defined climate goals.
The funding bodies should also contribute to educational and coaching offers for cultural players. Furthermore, the National Cultural Dialogue recommends a temporary platform for an exchange between the funding bodies throughout Switzerland.
And, according to the fourth recommendation, the funding bodies should use guidelines to provide information and raise awareness - on carbon accounting, reducing the climate impact of cultural projects and reducing CO2 emissions. According to the press release, the design and corresponding implementation of the recommendations is left to the respective cultural funding bodies.
The National Cultural Dialogue was launched in 2011. It involves the cultural representatives of the Confederation, the cantons, cities and municipalities as well as political bodies. These include the head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) as well as representatives of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education, the Swiss Association of Cities and the Swiss Association of Communes.
