The number of notifiable jobs fell sharply in 2023. This was mainly due to the drop in unemployment following the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco), the job registration requirement was once again implemented efficiently and in accordance with the law in 2023, Seco wrote in a press release on Friday. Specifically, 4111 jobseekers were placed within the scope of the job registration obligation.

According to Seco, around 426,000 jobs were registered with the regional employment centers (RAV) in 2023. Of these, 68%, or 287,700 jobs, were subject to registration. In the previous year, the proportion was significantly higher at 82% or 476,600 jobs.

The decline is mainly due to the sharp fall in unemployment. As a result, many professions no longer had to be registered. For example, vacancies for sales staff in retail outlets, service staff in the hospitality industry, bartenders and chefs were no longer subject to registration.

Seco also expects a further decline in the current year, as once again fewer types of occupation are subject to the job registration requirement. For example, cleaning staff and auxiliary staff in offices, hotels and other establishments are no longer required to register.

While 8.2% of the workforce will still be working in reportable occupations in 2023, the rate will fall to just 3.2% in 2024. During the coronavirus pandemic, the figure shot up to 15 and 20 percent respectively.

Industry, construction and gastronomy particularly affected

As in previous years, the industrial (28%), construction (21%) and hospitality (16%) sectors recorded the most reports. There were also major regional differences. According to Seco, more than half of the jobs reported in the cantons of Jura, Solothurn, Aargau and Basel-Land were in industry. In comparison, Graubünden and Geneva reported comparatively many jobs in the catering sector.

Since 2018, occupations with an unemployment rate of over 5 percent across Switzerland have been subject to the job registration requirement. This means that companies must first report vacancies to the RAV. These jobs are then advertised in a protected area on the job platform "Job-Room", which can only be accessed for five days by people registered with the RAV.

The job registration requirement was introduced in response to the adoption of the mass immigration initiative. Seco is responsible for monitoring the job registration requirement.
