In Switzerland, the number of people moving house last year fell to its lowest level for ten years. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday, 9.5 percent changed households, compared to 10.1 percent in the previous year.
The most frequent moves took place in the young adult age group. According to the FSO, 20 to 35-year-olds accounted for a fifth of all residential moves.
Of the 700,000 people who changed their place of residence in 2022, three quarters remained in the same canton. 16 percent moved to another canton and twelve percent moved abroad.
The average moving distance was 13.7 kilometers. According to the press release, the population of urban municipalities, with a relocation rate of 10.2 percent, tended to move much more than the rural population (7.8 percent).
Most of the moves were to larger or smaller apartments, according to the report. Almost three quarters of people who moved within Switzerland in 2022 opted for an apartment with more or fewer rooms. It was mainly young people and those over the age of 48 who moved into smaller apartments.
