"Crossing borders - broadening horizons": this is the motto under which Eric Nussbaumer, SP National Councillor from Basel, wants to spend his year as President of the National Council. He called on the newly sworn-in National Councillor to "trample down" his own mental garden fence from time to time.
Politics always begins with one's own convictions and views, said the newly elected President of the National Council, Eric Nussbaumer (SP/BL), in the National Council on Monday. And it often takes courage and strength to question one's own seemingly logical and well-established position.
In Switzerland, going beyond one's own borders is actually easy. Anyone who sees the Röstigraben as something that unites them will have no problem crossing it. And anyone who sees the Gotthard massif not just as a myth, but as a connecting pass or a connecting tunnel route, is already broadening their horizons. The European continental divide also shows the importance of Switzerland in the middle of the European continent.
"Those who sometimes trample down their own mental garden fence will also find ways and solutions in political discussions that are viable," said Nussbaumer. Alluding to the number of pending initiatives, the new Council President asked the Council to always carefully weigh up the use of parliamentary resources.
Nussbaumer wished for constructive debates in the large chamber as well as effective council work. He particularly welcomed the newly elected members in the semi-circle: "Enrich this council chamber with the breath of fresh air and the light-heartedness that I hope you bring with you!"
A performance by the Männerstimmen Basel, conducted by David Rossel, provided a musical accompaniment to the election of the President of the National Council. The singers live in the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft as well as in the border triangle.
