Switzerland and the United Kingdom will mutually recognize professional qualifications on a permanent basis after Brexit. The Swiss parliament has said yes to an agreement on a new recognition system. This will give professionals from both countries access to regulated professions.
On Monday, the Council of States, as the second chamber, voted in favor of the agreement without dissent. This provides for a general system of recognition that is strongly based on the one that applied during the EU membership of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (together the United Kingdom). Following the approval of the Councils, the Federal Council can ratify the agreement.
It covers all regulated professions and allows the competent authorities to check whether professional qualifications meet national requirements. According to the Federal Council, Switzerland is the only country to date that has a comprehensive agreement with the UK on the recognition of professional qualifications.
Since Brexit and until the end of this year, a transitional arrangement has been in place for the recognition of professional qualifications. The Federal Council is also authorized to conclude agreements on the recognition of professional qualifications for most regulated professions.
With the decision of the Council of States, the federal decree on the definitive agreement is ready for the final vote.
