The Federal Council is submitting a gas solidarity agreement with Germany and Italy to Parliament. The proposal has been unanimously welcomed in the consultation process.

The Federal Council announced on Wednesday that it is important for the security of gas supply that the solidarity agreement can be applied quickly. The agreement, which was signed in March, provides for protected customers to be supplied with gas from Germany or Italy in the event of a gas shortage. Conversely, Switzerland would have to help out neighboring countries in an emergency.

The Federal Council is now forwarding three draft federal decrees to Parliament, according to a statement. One resolution provides for the approval of the agreement, while the two other federal resolutions relate to the associated commitment credits totaling CHF 1.3 billion.

The financial burden on the federal government would only be temporary for both loans. In the case of gas deliveries from Germany or Italy to Switzerland, the costs would ultimately be borne by the domestic recipients, according to the communiqué. The agreement is subject to an optional referendum.
