Part of the former "Acker" hotel in Wildhaus SG burned down on Wednesday evening. Around a dozen people had to be evacuated from neighboring buildings as a precaution. No injuries were reported. The damage to property runs into the millions.

The alarm about the burning former hotel was received shortly before 6 p.m., according to the St. Gallen cantonal police. The vacant "Acker" consisted of one building made of wood and one made of concrete. When the fire department arrived, the wooden part was already fully engulfed in flames and could no longer be saved.

However, the fire department managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring buildings. Nevertheless, around a dozen residents of these houses had to be evacuated. They remained unharmed and were given private accommodation.

Late in the evening, the cantonal police announced that the part of the hotel that had caught fire and the ceiling of the underground parking garage below had collapsed. In order to contain possible damage to the environment, the firefighters now also have to collect the contaminated extinguishing water.

The fire-fighting work is expected to continue well into the night. Over a hundred firefighters, the rescue service and several patrols and specialists from the cantonal police are on duty. Excavators have also been called out to remove the red-hot fire protection.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. The cantonal police are therefore looking for witnesses to reconstruct the course of the fire.
