The Swiss Education Research Prize 2023 was awarded to a project on distance learning at the University. The winners were Paula Cacault (ETH Lausanne), Christian Hildebrand (University of St. Gallen), Jérémy Laurent-Lucchetti (University of Geneva) and Michele Pellizzari (University of Geneva). Through an experiment at the University of Geneva, the researchers studied how the availability of distance learning affects attendance and academic performance at the university. They found that attending lectures via live streaming lowered the performance of students with low abilities, but increased the performance of those with high abilities. Overall, students used the live streaming technology only occasionally, mainly when random events made attending class difficult (e.g. due to illness, bad weather or traffic disruptions). The experiment showed that the availability of live streaming only slightly reduced attendance in class. These results provide important insights into the design of university offerings. The prize was presented at a ceremony in Bern by the Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, and Silvia Steiner, President of the Conference of Cantonal Education Directors.
