The Zurich Justice Director Jacqueline Fehr (SP) has called for a criminal investigation into the cases of abuse in the Catholic Church. She has instructed the public prosecutor's office to work with colleagues from other cantons to develop proposals for such an investigation. Bishop Joseph Bonnemain, who is responsible for the Church's investigation, has agreed to contact the head of the Zurich public prosecutor's office. It is uncertain whether the cases will have any criminal consequences, as many may be time-barred. The aim should be to ensure that such cases do not occur in the Catholic Church in the future, said the Zurich Justice Director. It also raises the question of whether and how the cases were covered up. According to the first analysis of secret archives of Roman Catholic institutions by historians from the University of Zurich (UZH), at least 1002 cases of sexual abuse have been committed by Catholic clergy and religious in Switzerland in the past 70 years.
