Ticino's trade unions and left-wing parties have announced what they say is the biggest strike in the canton's public sector to date for Thursday. They have called on employees of the cantonal administration, secondary schools and grammar schools to strike in protest against the Ticino government's austerity policy.

The strike is directed against the Ticino government, which has refused to adjust salaries in line with inflation as part of the 2024 budget and has planned cuts for cantonal staff, the organization announced. The strike was called by the Association of Public Service Employees (VPOD), the trade unions Unia and OCST (Organizzazione cristiano-sociale ticinese) as well as the SP, Green and MPS parties.

The organization also called for a rally through the centre of Bellinzona. It will begin at 5 p.m. and lead to the seat of government, where various speeches will be held.
