Public transport in Switzerland increased its turnover by 7.2 percent last year. This was mainly due to sales of one-way tickets, which once again contributed the most to turnover. However, GA and Half-Fare travelcards also increased.
Transport companies were confronted with a "challenging economic environment" last year, Alliance Swisspass announced on Wednesday. Energy, maintenance, depreciation, wages and investments led to higher costs.
However, this could have been partially offset by the increase in travel. Nevertheless, turnover in public transport rose to around CHF 6.374 billion.
28.9 percent of this was achieved through the sale of one-way tickets. A total of 175 million one-way tickets were sold last year, around 14 percent more than in the previous year. They therefore account for around 70.8 percent of all tickets sold.
Good year for GA and Half-Fare travelcard
The sale of GA travelcards contributed 21.9% to sales. At the end of 2023, 447,116 GA travelcards were in circulation, 3.7% more than in 2022. The Half-Fare travelcard also increased by 5.8%. At the end of 2023, 3.15 million people were traveling with this travelcard.
Transport companies generated 9.4 percent of sales with day tickets. They were sold around 45.6 million times, making them the second most popular product. In third place are monthly travelcards, which were purchased 4.7 million times and therefore account for around 8% of sales.
Popular youth activities
The youth products launched in the middle of the year also met with great demand: The GA Night travelcard had been sold 80,000 times by the end of the year. This allows young people to travel on the entire public transport network from 7 p.m. onwards.
The Friends and Tandem day passes have also been well received. The Friends ticket, which allows four people to travel together, has been issued 29,000 times and the Tandem ticket 57,000 times, Alliance Swisspass told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry.
The launch of the Half-Fare Plus is also viewed positively. Since its launch on December 12, 70,800 customers have already opted for the season ticket with a discounted credit for any journey on public transport.
On average, 68% of all public transport ticket purchases were processed digitally, according to the press release. Analog sales channels such as ticket counters or ticket machines are being used less and less. Sales from ticket machines fell by 15.4 percent last year.
