Qatar: Natural gas transportation affected by escalation in the Red Sea

The security situation in the Red Sea is affecting the maritime transportation of liquefied natural gas, according to Qatar, a major producer. LNG is "just like any other transportation commodity", said Qatar's head of government Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos GR. The escalation in the sea off the Yemeni coast will have a negative impact on this.
The Houthi militia, which controls many areas in the north of the civil war-torn country of Yemen, has been attacking ships in the Red Sea for weeks. Cargo transportation through this important international trade route has come to a partial standstill as a result, with many shipping companies diverting their ships. In response, the USA and the UK repeatedly attacked Houthi positions in Yemen.
The direct consequences of this for consumers in Europe have so far been limited. However, the Houthi attacks and the Western response to them are fueling fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could spread to the entire region. Qatar is one of the world's most important suppliers of liquefied natural gas.
