Hundreds of rail services in Italy are expected to be canceled due to a rail strike in the country. The 24-hour strike begins at 9 pm on Saturday. It involves the staff of the Italian state railroads (FS - Ferrovie dello Stato) and the Lombardy regional company Trenord.
The strike is expected to lead to train cancellations on regional lines and high-speed trains, the state railroads announced on Friday. The effects of the strike in the form of train cancellations and delays could occur even before the end of the union protest and go beyond that.
According to SBB, cross-border trains are running as planned on the Swiss section of the route so that domestic traffic is not affected as much as possible. On its website, SBB recommends postponing travel to or through Italy until another time. Affected travelers with a reservation can contact their point of sale or the SBB Contact Center in advance for an exchange or refund, according to the statement.
The Italian state railroads asked passengers to inform themselves before going to the station and, if possible, to postpone their journey.
The strikes were called by the trade union federations, which are demanding the renewal of the collective agreements. The unions are also protesting against "inadequate salaries and the constant threat of attacks" on public transport staff. In view of repeated attacks, the unions are demanding more security measures for public transport staff.
