Swiss Air-Rescue (Rega) flew 21,000 missions in 2023. On average, its crews helped 37 patients per day. Its helicopters and ambulance jets were in the air almost as often as in the record year of 2022.
The number of flights fell by 1.6 percent compared to the previous year, as Rega reported on Wednesday. Compared with the five-year average, there was an increase of 15.7 percent, the second-highest figure since Rega was founded.
The company transported almost 14,000 patients. This figure is not congruent with the number of missions, as sometimes several patients are on board. Rega also undertakes search flights without transporting patients and transports livestock for mountain farming.
Rega has 14 bases throughout Switzerland. The Operations Center is located at Zurich Airport. In 2023, it organized almost 16,000 helicopter flights, 3.5 percent fewer than in 2022.
In addition to its missions in Switzerland, Rega repatriated 1353 people who had fallen ill or been involved in accidents abroad. It organized medical care for 338 of these in a scheduled aircraft and repatriated 1015 in one of its three ambulance jets.
