Regional buses and trains were less punctual in 2023

Buses and trains on Swiss regional transport were slightly less punctual overall in 2023 than in the previous year. However, test customers were more satisfied with cleanliness and customer information, according to the latest report from the federal government on the quality measurement system in regional passenger transport.
On average, around 94.5 percent of regional trains reached their destination on time or were less than three minutes late last year. A year earlier, the figure was 95 percent, as reported by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) on Monday.
In particular, the punctuality of express and regional express trains decreased, according to the report. Suburban trains and trains in rural areas and mountain regions performed better. Standard-gauge trains were more punctual than narrow-gauge trains.
In bus transport, the number of punctual journeys fell to below 90 percent, specifically from 90.13 to 89.66 points. Intercity buses and those in the mountains were significantly more punctual than buses in the conurbations.
According to the data, cleanliness at bus stops has improved - still the biggest point of criticism from test customers. Only two companies were still unsatisfactory here, compared to six in 2022.
"The results are a sign that regional transport companies are paying increasing attention to quality," the FOT announced. In addition, the measurement system introduced by the federal government is bearing fruit. Improvements can also be seen in customer information in vehicles and at stops. A total of 1043 bus, 229 rail and 10 streetcar lines were analyzed.
