Retour au fil d'actualité
Following the first relocation campaign a year ago, the remaining 40 or so deer are now to be captured at the Hörnli cemetery in Basel and transported to the canton of Jura. The fencing will then be reinforced.
The cemetery will remain closed while the animals are being captured, the Basel Department of Building and Transport (BVD) announced on Wednesday. The dates given are Wednesdays between January 31 and March 13.
The planned relocations would again be carried out by the Fondation Franz Weber under the direction of Claude Fischer, a wildlife specialist from the Haute école du paysage, d'ingénierie et d'architécture de Genève (HEPIA), it was reported. The Federal Office for the Environment has examined the project and granted the corresponding permit.
The BVD estimates that there are still around 40 deer on the cemetery grounds. It is not possible to say exactly, explained a spokeswoman for the BVD at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. Since last year's trapping operation, the animals have become shyer.
In addition to trapping with gillnets, box traps are also used, according to the press release. The animals are then transported to the Jura in individual crates, where they are ear-tagged and released in predetermined areas.
Grave decorations eaten
In recent years, the deer at the Hörnli cemetery have proliferated. The large population has led to stress and inbreeding among the animals. In addition to hedges and fences, the animals have also eaten the grave decorations, which has been stressful for many relatives of the deceased.
Once the main part of the cemetery is free of deer, a new fence and gate management should ensure that no new deer enter the site. A corresponding proposal is currently being drafted. Due to the expected costs, the Grand Council will make a final decision on the matter, it added.
