Return traffic on the north side of the Alps picked up speed on Whit Monday. The Touring Club of Switzerland reported a one-kilometre traffic jam between Quinto and Airolo TI shortly before midday. Travelers had to reckon with a time loss of around ten minutes.

At the border crossing to Italy in Chiasso TI, traffic was already overloaded shortly before 09:00.

The volume of traffic at the Gotthard north portal heading south also increased in the course of the morning. Two kilometers of traffic jams were recorded between Wassen and Göschenen UR shortly after 11.00 a.m., as the TCS announced via the X short message service. Drivers had to expect waiting times of up to 20 minutes.

The TCS expected traffic on the south-north axis to peak on Whit Monday. It therefore recommended that any return journey to the north should not be made until late Monday evening or through the night into Tuesday.
