Rhaetian Railway opens new rail tunnel into the Engadin

On Saturday afternoon, the Rhaetian Railway officially opened the new 5860-metre Albula Tunnel into the Engadin with a grand ceremony. Over 300 invited guests from the worlds of politics and business attended. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti was also expected to attend.
The Albula Tunnel has been a key part of the rail link to the Upper Engadine, a Unesco World Heritage route, since 1903. The new tunnel was built because the 121-year-old tunnel was in need of renovation. Construction took 10 years and cost 407 million Swiss francs.
As the Rhaetian Railway announced on Saturday, almost the entire political elite of Graubünden gathered at the opening ceremony at 1,800 meters above sea level. In addition to the cantonal government in corpore, most of Graubünden's federal parliamentarians were also present. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti was the guest of honor. The highlight of the opening was a tunnel show in the new tube.
