The Swiss elections of 2019 have seen a shift to the right, with the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) coming close to their previous record result. This shift has been driven by a strong focus on immigration and the current political climate in the Middle East. The right-wing bloc of SVP, FDP and smaller right-wing parties has increased by eleven seats to 95, but has failed to achieve an absolute majority. This shift is likely to have a significant impact on the political climate in Switzerland, with progressive causes likely to be given a boost. SVP faction leader Thomas Aeschi has stated that the consequence of this election will be a tougher immigration and asylum policy. However, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this shift will have on the political landscape.
