Riots broke out in Rapperswil-Jona SG on Friday evening after the ice hockey championship match between the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers and HC Fribourg-Gottéron. Supporters of the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers threw stones and other objects at members of the cantonal police and the security service.

Massive use was made of pepper spray to prevent a clash between the two fan camps, the St. Gallen cantonal police announced on Sunday. No security personnel were injured. Criminal proceedings against the fans involved are being investigated.

After the end of the match, which the visiting team won 4:1, there were verbal provocations between the fan camps in the stadium, according to the police. The supporters of both teams then left the stadium via separate exits.

The visiting fans boarded the two coaches. Immediately afterwards, a larger group of SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers fans gathered on the home side. Some people were wearing masks.

Three patrols accompanied the two touring cars along Gaswerkstrasse to Rietstrasse. Meanwhile, the group had run along Oberseestrasse towards the Lido traffic circle and then across the PARA parking lot to Rietstrasse.

Masked supporters attack

Several police officers were called in to prevent a clash between the two groups of fans. According to the police, around 40 masked SCRJ Lakers supporters then attacked the two coaches and the uniformed police officers.

A few HC Fribourg-Gottéron fans then left the coaches and threw glass bottles in the direction of the masked men. They in turn threw stones and other objects at the police officers, the SCRJ Lakers security service and the cantonal police patrol vehicles.

A clash between the two groups was prevented with the support of the security service and the massive use of pepper spray. The supporters of the home team were eventually pushed back. The visiting fans got back on their coaches.
