The Saas Valley, which has been cut off from the outside world since last Thursday due to a mudslide, will be accessible by road again from Wednesday. However, the repair work is only provisional, as the canton of Valais announced on Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide last Thursday and buried the cantonal road into the Saas Valley. Several hundred blocked tourists were flown out of the valley by helicopter.
The road should be reopened to traffic at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The work to reopen the section of the main Visp - Sass-Fee road between Stalden and Saas-Balen is nearing completion, the canton announced.
The work carried out continuously by the canton, the municipalities and the companies required, among other things, the reconstruction of the Mattwaldbach crossing, whose bridge was torn away by the mudslide last Thursday. A new bridge, the planning of which has already begun, is to be built at a later date.
