Sales of electric cars continued to rise in Switzerland in 2023. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), 35.7% more such vehicles were used on Swiss roads than in the previous year.

This corresponds to 45,538 electric vehicles as of the end of November of the current year, as reported by the TCS on Friday. This gave all-electric cars a market share of 20.2 percent in Switzerland. In 2022, this figure was still 17.8 percent.

Meanwhile, sales of hybrid vehicles also increased significantly in the same period, rising by 30.6%. The overall market share of plug-in vehicles in Switzerland amounted to 29.3% at the end of November.

Roadmap will hardly be achieved

In contrast, half a percent fewer petrol vehicles were put on the road by the end of November 2023 compared to the previous year. For diesel vehicles, this trend was also negative at minus 10.3 percent. According to the TCS, sales of vehicles with combustion engines therefore continued to decline.

Although the goal of the electromobility roadmap is unlikely to be achieved and Switzerland is falling behind in the European comparison, electric vehicles are continuing to gain ground on petrol and diesel vehicles in this country too, the TCS added.

The FSO's figures on the number of vehicles in Switzerland confirm this: While there were 110,751 electric vehicles at the end of last year, there were 155,495 at the end of September of the current year. The number of hybrid vehicles rose from 220,372 to 286,542 in the same period. The number of petrol vehicles fell from 2,991,092 to 2,952,567 and that of diesel vehicles from 1,319,337 to 1,273,815.
