Martin Landolt, President of Santésuisse, has proposed that the Swiss Federal Government should take responsibility for hospitals, instead of the cantons. He plans to draft a people's initiative to this effect, as he stated in an interview with Tamedia on Wednesday. Landolt believes that the cantons are caught in a "gigantic conflict of interests", leading to expensive and unnecessary hospitals, and driving up costs in the healthcare system. He believes that decisions made from the top-down would be more objective and less emotionally charged. Landolt also attributed the 8.7% increase in health insurance premiums to a lack of action from multiple political institutions. He plans to draft an initiative next year and hold talks with party leaders, associations and interest groups.
