The new disruption that paralyzed rail traffic on Lake Geneva on Thursday morning was caused by drilling work. Eight large cables at Renens VD station were hit and damaged, as the SBB Regional Director for Western Switzerland, David Fattebert, announced to the media in Lausanne on Thursday.

An internal investigation should clarify the reasons for the incident, Fattebert continued. SBB wanted to know whether bad luck, human error or inaccurate plans were the cause. However, such incidents can never be completely ruled out.

The repair work was complex, Fattebert continued. Initial functional tests on the cables, which are now being repaired, are planned for Thursday afternoon. A return to normal service on the Geneva-Lausanne line is not possible before early Friday morning.
