After 3.2 million kilometers on the rails, SBB is renovating its 19 Astoro compositions. The first of these trains for north-south traffic is undergoing a general overhaul at the Bellinzona plant. The others will be due by the end of 2027.
With the renewal, the trains are entering the second half of their service life, as SBB announced on Friday. This will make them fit for continued safe and reliable operation on services between Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
The renovation work includes the overhaul of the front cabin, the replacement of windows and lighting, the partial replacement of the WC, the complete repainting of the carriage bodies and the renewal of the passenger compartment lighting with LEDs. There are also new carpets at the entrance. Further work will be carried out on components such as bogies and front couplings.
Around 60 employees are involved in the work at the Bellinzona plant. The entire project will cost the railroad company 120 million francs. The first fully renovated train will leave the factory in late summer.
