The SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) have identified a problem with the rolling stock as the cause of the derailment of a goods train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on Thursday. Rudolf Büchi, Deputy Head of Infrastructure at the SBB, stated at a media conference in Bellinzona TI on Friday that the track and switches in the tunnel were in good condition. The damage indicated that there must have been an issue with the rolling stock, and there was no danger to passenger trains. The tunnel is inspected and maintained on a weekly basis, and no problems were detected with the train during the automatic control in Claro TI. The alarm system in the tunnel did not sound during the train's passage. It is not yet known what caused the problem with the train, which had 30 wagons and was travelling from Italy to Germany. 23 of the wagons derailed.nnnnnnnn
