German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is willing to negotiate the timetable for the new Bundestag elections. "We should discuss the date as calmly as possible," he said after the EU summit in Budapest.
The German "traffic light" coalition of SPD, FDP and Greens collapsed on Wednesday when Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) in a dispute over budget policy. Scholz announced a vote of confidence for January 15, which would lead to a general election in March. If a vote of confidence is lost, the Bundestag can be dissolved.
