Scholz: Ukraine does not need a dictated peace

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's maximum demands for an end to the war in Ukraine as a push for a dictatorial peace. What Putin is proposing is to "document an imperialist raid", the SPD politician told ARD television on the sidelines of the G7 summit in southern Italy on Saturday. "What we need is not a dictated peace, but a fair and just peace that focuses on integrity and sovereignty."
The peace conference starting in Switzerland on Saturday is an important first step in this direction, even if the major issues will not yet be decided there, said Scholz.
Immediately before the consultations of almost 60 heads of state and government in Lucerne, Putin had demanded that Ukraine completely renounce the territories claimed by Russia - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhia and the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea - and that Ukraine should not seek any prospects as a NATO member.
Scholz did not want to rule out talks with Putin in the future. He had repeatedly said that he would do so again, but it had to be the right time. "Such talks only make sense if there is something concrete to talk about."
