On September 22, the Schwyz electorate will vote on a new administration and security building at the Kaltbach site in Schwyz. The major project is set to cost CHF 139 million and will bring together various parts of the cantonal administration.

The new building is intended to replace the current administration building on Bahnhofstrasse in Schwyz. According to the voting message, this building dates back to the 1960s and its technical and operational facilities no longer meet today's requirements. High repair and maintenance costs would be incurred repeatedly, it says.

The new administration building will one day be built on the Kaltbach site in Schwyz. The land belongs to the canton. The new building will be home to the Schwyz fire department, the Schwyz rescue service and the new police operations control center, which will be operated jointly with the Zug police. The building offers space for a total of 500 workplaces.

Twelve administrative locations could be merged with the large-scale project, according to the voting documents. Work processes could be made more efficient and rental costs worth around CHF 1.2 million could be saved.

The Schwyz Cantonal Council debated the major project in the spring of this year and approved the CHF 139 million loan for the project by 86 votes to 8. The new administration building will be a "practical, functional building", said André Rüegsegger (SVP), the responsible Landammann and construction director, in the cantonal council session at the time.

One of the referendum committee's objections is the planned location of the new building. A large part of the administration would be relocated to the outskirts of the municipality of Schwyz. In addition, the relocation of the administration to the Kaltbach site would mean that the stores and restaurants in the village center would have fewer customers in future.

If voters in Schwyz approve the proposal on September 22, construction should begin in spring 2026. If everything goes according to plan, the building could be occupied in 2029.
