Several hundred people gathered for a pro-Palestine rally in the city of Zurich on Saturday. Around 700 people took part in the demonstration on Helvetiaplatz, as a photographer reported to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The Palestine Committee Zurich had called for the authorized event. Among other things, the demonstrators called for a free Palestine and international solidarity.
"Free Gaza" and "Stop the genocide and the ongoing Palestinian Nakba", read the banners. The Nakba ("catastrophe" in Arabic) refers to the violent expulsion and expropriation of land, property and possessions of the Palestinians as well as the destruction of their society. The target of the criticism and demands was Israel.
Israel firmly denies the genocide accusations against it. It invokes its right to self-defense after terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking hostages. Several pro-Palestine demonstrations have taken place in Zurich in the past.
