A shopping center in Wetzikon in the Zurich Oberland was evacuated on Monday afternoon because several people noticed a pungent smell. However, according to the cantonal police, there was no danger to the population or the environment at any time.

The Zurich Protection & Rescue Operations Center was alerted shortly before 3.45 p.m., according to the cantonal police. Several people in the shopping center had noticed an indefinable, pungent smell that was causing coughing and breathing difficulties.

A large contingent of rescue and emergency services then evacuated the shopping center. The emergency services examined around ten people for breathing difficulties. Two of them were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The substance that caused the odor and irritation has not yet been clearly identified. "However, the substance can be ruled out as hazardous," wrote the police. There was no danger to the population or the environment at any time.
