17 seats in the Swiss Council of States have been filled so far, with 16 of them going to incumbents. The FDP has secured eight of their previous seats, the Mitte-Partei seven, and the SVP and the Grünen one each. There will be second rounds of voting in at least four cantons. Thomas Minder, a Schaffhausen independent who has been in the SVP faction for twelve years, is in danger of not being re-elected, as he is in third place behind Simon Stocker of the SP. Hannes Germann (SVP/SH) was re-elected on the first round, having been a Ständerat since 2002. Thierry Burkart (FDP) was re-elected in Aargau, while the seat of the retired Hansjörg Knecht (SVP) is still open. Primin Bischoff (Mitte) was re-elected in Solothurn, and the seats in Appenzell Innerrhoden and Ausserrhoden, Glarus, Graubünden, Luzern, Nidwalden and Obwalden, Uri and Zug have been filled. The FDP's traditional seat in Zurich is in danger of being lost, as Gregor Rutz (SVP) is ahead of Regine Sauter (FDP) according to polls. Daniel Jositsch (SP) is expected to be re-elected. In Bern, Werner Salzmann (SVP) is in the lead, followed by Flavia Wasserfallen (SP) and Sandra Hess (FDP). In Schwyz, Petra Gössi (FDP) is likely to become the first female Ständerat, with Pirmin Schwander (SVP) in second place. Othmar Reichmuth (Mitte) is likely to lose his seat. In St. Gallen, Benedikt Würth (Mitte) and Esther Friedli (SVP) are in the lead, but it is unclear if they will get the absolute majority. In Freiburg, Isabelle Chassot (Mitte) and Johanna Gapany (FDP) will go to a second round. In Wallis, Beat Rieder (Mitte) is likely to be re-elected, while Marianne Maret (Mitte) will go to a second round. In Geneva, Mauro Poggia (MCG) is ahead of Carlo Sommaruga (SP) and Lisa Mazzone (Grüne). In Basel-Stadt, Eva Herzog (SP) is likely to be re-elected. 8 members of the Council of States did not stand for re-election, and one seat is vacant due to Marina Carobbio Guscetti (SP) joining the Ticino government. Daniel Fässler (Mitte/AI) and Erich Ettlin (Mitte/OW) were elected before the election. The second rounds of voting will take place between 12th and 26th November. The Mitte currently holds 14 seats, the FDP 12, the SVP 8, the SP 6 and the Grünen 5.
