A German ski tourer was swept away and buried by an avalanche in the Diavolezza area near Pontresina GR on Sunday. Despite immediate resuscitation, the 59-year-old died in the avalanche field in a high alpine location below Piz Palü.

The man was part of a group of three ski tourers from Germany, as the Graubünden cantonal police reported on Monday. The group was heading downhill from Piz Palü at midday when an icefall occurred at Fuorcla Bellavista just below 3,700 meters above sea level.

Two of the tourers were able to avoid the ice avalanche. The 59-year-old, however, was caught up in the mass of snow and ice, swept away and buried. Despite being found quickly and immediately resuscitated, he died in the avalanche field. Rega and HeliBernina helicopters were deployed for the rescue and transportation.
