CSU leader Markus Söder has promised CDU leader Friedrich Merz his full support for the Bundestag election campaign. "The K-question has been decided. Friedrich Merz will do it. I'm fine with it and expressly support it," said the Bavarian Minister President in Berlin.

The two party leaders had previously agreed that Merz would challenge incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the next federal election in 2025. He supports Merz without any gnashing of teeth, Söder emphasized. "The two of us are in complete agreement." There is only one goal for the CDU/CSU, he said, and that is to "replace the traffic light system and get Germany back on track".

Scholz's government of SPD, Greens and FDP is known as the "traffic light" because of its party colors. In current voter polls, the CDU/CSU is far ahead of the governing parties. The general election will take place in September 2025.
