The Melchsee-Frutt solar power project is a joint venture between the Obwalden Electricity Works (EWO) and the Basel energy provider IWB. The project aims to produce enough electricity to power 10,000 households annually. On November 26th, the local community of Kerns and the Alpgenossenschaft Kerns outside the stone bridge will vote on the project. The demonstration plant is currently being built on the Melchsee-Frutt and the project documents have been submitted for review. The canton will coordinate the building permit process and grant any necessary building permits. The photovoltaic plant will cover a maximum of 45 hectares and will not affect valuable habitats such as marshes. It is expected to produce 45 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The solar panels will be installed at a height of four meters and at a steep angle to capture the reflected light from the snow on the north side. The highest production rate is expected between mid-February and the end of April when there is still a lot of snow but the sun is also shining longer.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
