The two SP candidates for the successor to Federal Councillor Alain Berset, Beat Jans and Jon Pult, did not reveal their cards after the first hearings. They were heard by the SVP, FDP, Center, GLP and Green parliamentary groups.
It had been a long and intensive day, said Beat Jans, President of the Basel government, on Tuesday evening in the Federal Palace in Bern: "But I don't know what to tell you. I can't talk about the meeting."
Jans said he could not say whether he had been able to score points against his rival, Graubünden National Councillor Jon Pult. However, he had tried to explain what he had learned during his time as a member of the Basel cantonal government. In his view, executive experience is important.
"It's impossible for me to draw a balance," said Pult. Like Jans, the National Councillor from Graubünden did not want to give an assessment of how the hearings could affect the race for the seat in the Federal Council. However, he was able to present his positions openly and honestly: "I am at peace with myself." Pult spoke of a "fair and correct procedure". His feeling is therefore good.
In response to a question from a journalist, Pult explained that he was not concerned about the speculation surrounding a possible explosive candidacy. However, he is always open to continuing the dialog with all members of parliament.
